Here’s a great video of Hazel Scott. Aside from her great musicianship, she also was the first woman of color to have her own national tv show. Her trio often consisted of Charles Mingus on Bass and Rudy Nichols on drums. Scott’s career was curtailed because of her activism against segregation. The former wife of Adam Clayton Powell, she moved to France and toured Europe for many years before returning to New York City where she died in 1981.
